{"id":4208,"date":"2023-03-31T11:56:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T09:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.de\/?p=4208"},"modified":"2023-03-31T11:56:37","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T09:56:37","slug":"leading-with-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.de\/de\/2023\/03\/31\/leading-with-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading with Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hello Friends!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve given a number of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=3b996c898e&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\">Keynotes<\/a>&nbsp;on the topics of \u201cOwning Your Leadership\u201d and \u201cLeadership Effectiveness\u201d over the last several months and one of the quotes I often use almost always creates a frisson of excitement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u201cLeaders are&nbsp;made, not born, and made more by themselves&nbsp;than by any external means.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warren Bennis\u2019s quote seems to awaken \u2013 in many cases for the first time \u2013 a feeling that leadership is something one can learn; it is something that we can work at; it is a skill like any other.<br>\u00a0<br>And as Amy Edmondson &#8211;\u00a0<strong>the<\/strong>\u00a0guru on psychological safety in the workplace \u2013 confirms, \u201cLeader is a Role. Leadership is a Behaviour.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Leadership of the past was often authoritarian, autocratic, and paternalistic. Over time, not only have companies and management changed and shifted, but the world has too. And leaders of today, and particularly leaders of tomorrow, are increasingly those whose leadership is driven by the \u201csoft skills\u201d. Leadership is a practice. And making that choice is very much about being the change you want to see in the world. About modelling the skills and the behaviour that you want to see. Believing that it is possible to change and grow is an essential building block for great leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Adam Grant discusses with Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, in this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=acf7fac402&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Re:Thinking episode<\/a>, a growth mindset is all about having a sense of purpose and mission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=46bd7bf31b&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carol Dweck\u2019s work<\/a>&nbsp;on growth mindset\u2026it&#8217;s really helped us go from this, know it all to learn it alls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn\u2019t \u201clearn it alls\u201d the most inspiring thing ever?? I love it. It signifies such a thirst for knowledge and growth!! What is the secret sauce to effective leadership? Turns out, it might just come down to four words:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=fd796b520c&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lead from the Heart<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And before you roll your eyes (as I confess I sometimes do when things veer too far out&nbsp;of facts &amp; figures territory \ud83d\ude09) there is actual science to back this up!&nbsp;<br><br>There&#8217;s compelling new science that proves human hearts actually play a huge role in motivating performance\u2026&nbsp;The emerging science shows how&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=cd51619a1d&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\">the human heart and brain are connected through the vagus nerve<\/a>, with the heart sending more signals to the brain than the brain sends back. The net effect is that human beings are not as rational as we&#8217;ve always believed and up to 95 percent of the decisions we make every day are driven by feelings and emotions.&nbsp;[\u2026] Employee decisions to be engaged, loyal, committed, and productive are&nbsp;<em>not&nbsp;<\/em>made rationally &#8212; they&#8217;re decisions made by their hearts.<br><br>I spent the past weekend on a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=6fe82e9787&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continuing education course<\/a>&nbsp;on neuroscience and behavioural psychology. (It was absolutely fascinating and I was like a human sponge the whole time!) And that is exactly what we learned. Did you know, that the Neocortex (the part of the brain we use to think) works *<strong>4 times slower<\/strong>* than the Limbic System, the part of the brain that contains feelings and emotions??&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=2351f23fa6&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We are far less rational than we think<\/a>. Ren\u00e9 Descartes might have been right with his \u201cCogito ergo sum \u2013 I think therefore I am\u201d but that can be enhanced with Julia Harig\u2019s \u201cI feel therefore I decide and act\u201d!&nbsp;\ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#704c9f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">MODEL YOUR VALUES&#8230;<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really enjoyed this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jnhcoaching.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1edbcf2879558e7cdb5ac6676&amp;id=76c4861b16&amp;e=56e0a5cca5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast<\/a>&nbsp;interviewing a female leader on how she developed her leadership style and how she chose her leadership behaviour. Her top tip? Know your Core Values. What motivates you? How do you make decisions?
